What is Varnamala?
A collection of symbols used to write a single language or multiple languages is called alphabet in Hindi it is also known as Varnamala (a group of letters) is also spelled as Barnamala. These symbols or characters represent the original sounds used in a particular language. In general, each alphabet (i.e.) Varnamala consists of two types of letters: vowel and consonant characters.
‘Alphabet’ is called ‘alphabet’ in English. Whereas Varnamala in Hindi. In Bengali, it is known as Barna (বর্ণ) or Barnamala(বর্ণমালা).
Devanagari is a compound of “deva” देव and “nāgarī” नागरी; Hindi pronunciation: also called Nagari is an abugida(alphasyllabary) used in India and Nepal.
The letter order of Devanagari, like nearly all Brahmic scripts, is based on phonetic principles that consider both the manner and place of articulation of the consonants and vowels they represent. This arrangement is usually referred to as the varṇamālā(वर्णमाला) garland of letters”. The format of Devanagari for Sanskrit serves as the prototype for its application, with minor variations or additions, to other languages.
The script is used for over 120 spoken Indo-Aryan languages, including Hindi, Nepali, Marathi, Maithili, Awadhi, Newari and Bhojpuri. It is also used for writing classical Sanskrit texts.
